1. Trust the Recipient

Our number one rule of thumb is that you need to trust the person, or people, you’re sending the photo and/or video to! Of course, trust is a touchy subject, but listen to your gut.

2. Crop Out Your Face

Taking your face out of the photo is one easy way to make sure your photos aren’t attributed to you. It may seem common-sense, but this truly is a great practice to keep in mind in an age of hackers. By doing this, you ensure the photo cannot be traced back to you.

3. Turn off automatic backup (Google Photos & iCloud)

Are your photos being synced to the cloud without you even realizing it? Although most cloud storage platforms are secure, you’re better off safe than sorry. In an ideal world, you should take the photo and immediately delete it off of your device. By doing so, you lower the chance of someone stealing or leaking your photos if your device gets hacked into or physically stolen.

4. Research the apps you’re using

Be sure to read app reviews and do your due diligence before downloading any app as a form of communication. There are many shady apps that are live on the app stores and many more that are being developed and launched everyday. It’s important to make sure the developers behind the apps you’re using are trusted.

5. Use encrypted apps

Always use messaging apps that are end-to-end encrypted. Meaning, no one can access your data except for you! Messages are one of the most private channels of information sharing and it’s important your conversations stay between you and the person, or people, you’re texting. If the app is not encrypted, it’s usually for a reason.

6. Use a VPN

Using a VPN, or a virtual private network, will ensure your online activity is private and anonymous. Make sure you do your due diligence when searching for a trusted VPN as well!
